US Revokes 85,000 Visas In Major Crackdown

The United States has revoked around 85,000 visas in 2025 as part of an immigration and security enforcement drive. Officials confirmed that the cancellations happened across multiple visa categories, including students and workers.

Public Safety Cited As Main Reason

According to the State Department, the primary reasons behind the cancellations were public safety and criminal violations. Many visa holders lost their status following offences such as DUI, theft and assault. Officials said the checks are continuing and revocations may rise further as additional cases are reviewed.

Among the total cancellations, more than 8,000 student visas were revoked. This number is significantly higher than the previous year, showing a stricter approach towards students who violate visa terms or face criminal charges.

Wider Enforcement Environment

The revocations come during a broader crackdown under the current administration, which has expanded background checks, social-media reviews and continuous vetting of foreign nationals. Authorities emphasised that visas are a conditional privilege, and they can be revoked at any time if new information emerges.

Officials added that the aim of the policy is to ensure that people who pose risks to public safety or security do not remain in the country. The move has already led to strong reactions from affected communities, especially among student groups and workers who fear further enforcement action.
