US Report: India ‘Minimal Steps’, Pakistan ‘Rarely Acts’ on Rights Abuses

The latest U.S. State Department human rights report has criticized both India and Pakistan for insufficient action against rights violations. It states that India took “minimal credible steps” to address abuses committed by officials, while Pakistan “rarely took credible steps” to act against such misconduct. The report, shorter and less detailed than previous versions, appears aimed at preserving strategic relations with both countries.

India’s Rights Challenges Highlighted

Despite the moderated tone, global rights groups continue to express concern over issues in India, including the marginalization of religious minorities, contentious citizenship and religious conversion laws, and the 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. The Indian government has rejected these concerns, highlighting welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and policies it says benefit all citizens equally.

Pakistan’s Accountability Lapses Noted

The report also cites Pakistan’s persistent failure to hold security forces and officials accountable for human rights violations. Islamabad has defended its record, attributing the challenges to internal security threats and political instability.
