US Raid in Venezuela Leaves Dozens Dead

A US-led military operation in Venezuela aimed at capturing President Nicolás Maduro has resulted in a significant number of deaths, according to multiple official figures. The raid, which took place in Caracas, ended with the capture of Maduro and led to clashes between US forces and Venezuelan and allied personnel.

Casualties Reported

Venezuelan and Cuban authorities reported that at least 55 military personnel were killed during the operation, including 23 Venezuelan security officers and 32 Cuban soldiers and police assigned to protect Maduro’s government. Venezuelan officials also said there were additional civilian deaths, but an exact number has not been confirmed. US assessments estimate the number of fatalities could be higher, potentially approaching around 75 people when including all casualties on the ground.

Maduro’s Capture and Aftermath

Maduro and his wife were detained by US special operations forces and transported to the United States, where they are expected to face federal charges, including narcotics-related offences. The US government has said the mission was successful and that Maduro will be held to account under US law.

In response to the deaths, Cuba declared two days of national mourning, and Venezuela’s acting president announced a week of mourning for Venezuelan military personnel killed in the raid. The incident has heightened tensions in the region and drawn widespread international attention.

Broader Impact

The operation has sparked debate over its legality and consequences. Venezuela’s interim government has denounced the raid as an act of aggression, while the US maintains it was justified based on criminal charges against Maduro. The situation has created political challenges as Venezuela moves into a transitional period following the removal of Maduro from power.
