US President Biden to Celebrate Diwali with Indian Americans at White House
US President Joe Biden will celebrate Diwali on Monday evening at the White House, hosting a large number of Indian Americans from across the country.
As part of the festivities, Biden will light a traditional Diya lamp in the Blue Room, continuing the tradition of Diwali celebrations at the White House.
Diwali Celebrations at the White House
This will mark Biden’s final Diwali celebration as President, as he will not seek re-election. The event will include remarks from the President, followed by a reception for Indian American guests. In a special moment, a video message from NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, who is currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS), will be shared. Williams, a practicing Hindu, has previously celebrated Diwali from space and brought cultural items like samosas, copies of the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita with her to honor her heritage.
Cultural Performances and Entertainment
Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Nootana, a classical South Asian dance and music group based in Washington, DC. The Marine Corps Band will also perform during the event, adding to the cultural richness of the celebration.
This Diwali event at the White House reflects the growing recognition and celebration of Indian culture in the US, fostering stronger cultural ties between the two nations.
