US Pilot Condemns Dubai Air Show After Tejas Crash
A United States F-16 demonstration pilot, Major Taylor “FEMA” Hiester, said his team cancelled their scheduled performance at the Dubai Airshow after an Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet crashed during a display. The accident, which occurred on November 21, resulted in the death of the Indian pilot and immediately raised questions about whether flying displays should continue.
Pilot Calls Organisers’ Decision “Shocking”
Hiester criticised the organisers for allowing the show to continue despite the tragedy. He said he was uncomfortable performing at an event where a fellow aviator had just lost his life and felt it was inappropriate for entertainment to proceed as normal. Out of respect for the Indian pilot, his team withdrew from their demonstration slot.
Safety Concerns Come Into Focus
The decision to continue the airshow has triggered debate over standard procedures following major accidents. While some global airshows follow similar norms, the severity of the Tejas crash has intensified scrutiny on event safety protocols.
The Indian Air Force has ordered a detailed investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Wider Impact on Airshow Practices
The incident is expected to prompt discussions on whether mandatory pauses or cancellations should follow fatal aviation accidents during public displays.
Industry experts say the Dubai episode may influence safety expectations at future international airshows.
