The Trump administration has temporarily paused processing of immigrant visa applications at US embassies and consulates worldwide as the State Department trains consular officers on tougher screening standards, including whether applicants could become dependent on public assistance.

The State Department began implementing the pause in early August, requiring embassies and consulates to adjust scheduled immigrant visa appointments while officers undergo additional training.
Applicants with interviews already scheduled have reportedly received cancellation notices and been told they will be informed of new dates. Authorities have not announced when normal processing will fully resume.
The administration says the training is intended to ensure immigration officers apply updated eligibility standards consistently when assessing applicants.
Trump Tightens ‘Public Charge’ Visa Screening
A central focus of the new guidance is the “public charge” test, which allows immigration authorities to consider whether an applicant is likely to rely substantially on certain government benefits after entering the United States.
The latest move follows an earlier attempt to restrict immigrant visa processing for applicants from dozens of countries under similar criteria. That policy faced legal challenges and was recently blocked by a federal court.
The temporary global pause is therefore separate from a permanent ban on immigrant visas.
Wider US Immigration Crackdown Expands
The visa pause comes amid a broader tightening of both legal and illegal immigration under President Donald Trump.
Washington is also preparing to revoke B1 and B2 visas held by potentially up to 200,000 people who entered the US as tourists or business visitors before applying for asylum.
Visa applicants are additionally facing increased social-media scrutiny, tighter vetting requirements and higher costs across parts of the US immigration system.
