US Networks Halt Trump Coverage Over CNN Ban
Major US television networks have suspended pooled video coverage of President Donald Trump after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from its grounds. The move represents an unusual collective protest by broadcasters over restrictions on presidential press access.
US Networks Suspend Trump Pool Coverage
ABC News, CBS News, NBC News and Fox News said they would stop providing television pool coverage of presidential events after CNN was removed from the rotating White House TV pool. CNN is one of five networks that normally share responsibility for filming presidential events and distributing footage to other broadcasters.
The suspension applies to events designated for presidential pool coverage. Other pooled reporting involving Congress and selected events will continue.
The networks said the public had an interest in receiving independent information about the government and argued that administrations should not restrict news organisations because of disagreements over their reporting.
CNN, Politico and MS NOW Sue White House
CNN, MS NOW and Politico have also filed a federal lawsuit challenging the withdrawal of their White House access.
The organisations argue that the restrictions violate First Amendment press protections and Fifth Amendment due process rights. They are seeking expedited court intervention and restoration of their credentials.
Trump Defends White House Media Restrictions
Trump has defended the decision, accusing the three outlets of publishing false or unfair coverage. He has denied that the action represents an attack on press freedom and described it instead as action against what he calls “fake news.”
The dispute has disrupted the traditional White House television pool system and intensified an ongoing legal and political confrontation over media access to the presidency.
