US Floats Special Economic Zone Idea in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the United States has proposed creating a special or free economic zone in a frontline region of eastern Ukraine as part of broader diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia. He stated that the idea was discussed during ongoing talks involving Western partners, but stressed that no agreement has been reached.

Plan Tied to Frontline Adjustments

According to Zelensky, the proposal would involve adjustments along parts of the current front line, particularly in eastern Ukraine, where fighting has continued for months. The suggested special economic zone would focus on rebuilding economic activity and attracting investment. However, Zelensky made it clear that Ukraine has serious concerns about security, governance and the risk of Russian forces exploiting any withdrawal or demilitarised arrangement.

Territorial Integrity Remains Key Issue

Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains non negotiable. He said that any proposal involving changes to control over Ukrainian land cannot be decided without the consent of the Ukrainian people. He added that Kyiv would not accept arrangements that weaken its sovereignty or allow Russia to gain strategic advantage under the guise of economic cooperation.

Talks Continue Without Final Decision

The proposal is part of wider diplomatic discussions aimed at freezing the conflict or reaching a negotiated settlement. Zelensky said discussions are ongoing and involve multiple unresolved issues, including security guarantees and the future status of contested regions. He emphasised that Ukraine will continue to consult its allies while prioritising national security and public opinion.
