US Envoy Says India Committed On Russian Oil
The United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, has said that India has made a commitment regarding its purchases of Russian crude oil, amid ongoing discussions on energy security and bilateral trade. His remarks come at a time when global energy flows are under scrutiny due to geopolitical tensions.
Sergio Gor On India Russian Oil Commitment
Speaking at a public event, Sergio Gor stated that the United States does not want countries purchasing Russian oil and indicated that India has conveyed a commitment on the matter. He linked the position to broader international efforts aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine by limiting energy revenues flowing to Moscow.
The envoy’s comments come as Washington continues diplomatic engagement with key energy-importing nations, including India.
India Diversifies Crude Oil Imports
India has repeatedly maintained that its energy procurement decisions are guided by national interest, affordability, and energy security. Over the past two years, India significantly increased imports of discounted Russian crude following Western sanctions on Moscow.
However, recent trends show Indian refiners exploring alternative suppliers in West Asia and Latin America, even as Russian oil remains part of the import mix. Officials have consistently emphasized diversification rather than dependence on a single source.
India-US Energy And Trade Talks Continue
The envoy also indicated that discussions are underway regarding potential energy cooperation, including options involving other crude suppliers. At the same time, negotiations on an interim India-US trade understanding are progressing.
The developments reflect a broader strategic dialogue between New Delhi and Washington that covers trade, technology, and energy security.
