US Envoy Backs Manipur Development Push
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has praised Manipur’s natural beauty and backed efforts to accelerate development in the Northeast, during a visit focused on tourism, economic ties and greater cooperation between India and the United States.

Gor met Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh in Imphal and described the state as a place of “stunning beauty”.
He also welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on the development of Northeast India, saying such attention was important for a diverse country like India.
The US envoy discussed Manipur’s tourism potential and sought information about visitor numbers and opportunities for expanding the sector.
US and Manipur Discuss Stronger Economic Ties
Gor said he and the Chief Minister exchanged ideas on how India and the United States could work together to strengthen economic links.
Khemchand highlighted tourism and allied sectors as potential areas for growth and invited the ambassador to return for the Manipur Sangai Festival.
No specific US investment package or new development programme was announced during the meeting.
US Ambassador Visits Key Manipur Landmarks
During his visit, Gor also toured Kangla Fort, the historic seat of the former Manipur kingdom, and Khwairamband Keithel, the famous market predominantly operated by women.
He also met Governor A K Bhalla for discussions on issues of mutual interest.
Gor is the first US ambassador to visit Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023, giving the trip added diplomatic significance as efforts continue to restore stability and promote economic recovery.
