US Embassy Warns of Violence Ahead of Bangladesh Polls
The United States Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh has issued a security alert ahead of the country’s parliamentary elections and national referendum scheduled for February 12, 2026. The advisory warns that political violence and possible extremist attacks could occur during the election period.
Alert Advises Caution
The embassy urged U.S. citizens and foreign residents to remain vigilant, avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, and exercise caution near polling stations, political rallies and religious sites. It said that even peaceful events can become confrontational and escalate quickly.
Transportation and Embassy Services
Bangladesh authorities have announced transport restrictions on motorcycles from February 10 and broader transport limits on February 11 and 12. The embassy also said its onsite services will be limited on election days and advised people to review emergency plans and stay aware of surroundings.
Election Context
The alert comes as Bangladesh prepares for one of its most closely watched elections, with heightened political activity and previous incidents of unrest prompting safety concerns. Security forces and election officials have been mobilised across the country ahead of the vote.
