US Deports Illegal Indian Immigrants Ahead of Elections

The United States has deported a group of Indian nationals who were living illegally in the country, sending them back on a chartered flight earlier this week.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Friday that this operation was conducted in collaboration with the Indian government as part of ongoing efforts to enforce US immigration laws.

The deportation flight, which departed on October 22, highlights the US government’s stringent approach to illegal immigration. Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior official at DHS, warned against falling for false promises made by smugglers, reiterating that those without a legal basis to remain in the US face swift removal.

Focus on Lawful Immigration

The DHS emphasized its commitment to upholding immigration laws and encouraging the use of lawful pathways for migration. Since the implementation of the Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation in June 2024, encounters at the southwest US border have decreased by 55%. In the fiscal year 2024, the DHS deported or repatriated over 160,000 individuals across 145 countries, including India.

Global Repatriation Efforts

DHS officials stated that this deportation was part of a broader initiative to engage foreign governments in accepting the return of their nationals who lack legal status in the US. The agency has carried out repatriation flights to countries such as Colombia, Peru, Egypt, China, and India, among others, as part of efforts to reduce irregular migration and combat smuggling networks.
