US Court Strikes Down Trump Immigration Freeze

A US federal judge has struck down immigration policies introduced under President Donald Trump that had paused key immigration benefit decisions for applicants from 39 countries. The ruling said the measures were unlawful and affected applications related to asylum, work permits, green cards and citizenship.

Trump Immigration Freeze Blocked By US Court

Chief US District Judge John McConnell ruled that the administration’s immigration restrictions exceeded legal authority and violated required procedures. The policies had placed several categories of immigration applications on hold for people from countries covered by expanded travel restrictions.

The measures were introduced after security concerns linked to a shooting incident involving an Afghan immigrant, but the court found that immigration decisions could not be frozen broadly on the basis of nationality.

Green Card And Work Permit Applications Affected

The freeze had affected applicants seeking asylum, employment authorisation, permanent residency and naturalisation. Many applicants were left waiting without final decisions, creating uncertainty over legal status, work rights and family settlement plans.

The ruling allows immigration benefit applications from affected countries to move forward under standard legal procedures, unless the government appeals or introduces a revised policy within the law.

Will Indian Applicants Be Impacted?

India was not among the 39 countries covered by the travel-related restrictions. This means Indian applicants were not directly affected by the immigration freeze struck down by the court.

However, the ruling is still significant for the broader US immigration system because it limits the government’s ability to delay or block immigration benefits through sweeping nationality-based restrictions. The decision may also influence future challenges to immigration policies affecting visa holders, asylum seekers and green card applicants.
