US Awards $58.6 Billion Patriot Missile Deal
The US Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth up to $58.6 billion to produce Patriot interceptor missiles, as military operations in Iran and continued support for Ukraine place pressure on American weapons inventories.

The agreement converts a one-year contract worth $4.7 billion, awarded in April, into a seven-year procurement framework covering fiscal years 2026 to 2032.
The contract focuses on Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement interceptors. However, the final expenditure, production quantities and delivery schedules will depend on future negotiations and funding approved by the US Congress.
The PAC-3 MSE is a hit-to-kill interceptor designed to destroy tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and aircraft as part of the Patriot air-defence system.
Patriot Missile Stocks Fall Below 1,000
The procurement comes amid concern over declining American missile inventories. The US has supplied large quantities of air-defence weapons to Ukraine and other allies while also using interceptors during military operations in the Middle East.
Independent estimates indicate that the US military now holds fewer than 1,000 Patriot interceptors and fewer than 250 Terminal High Altitude Area Defence interceptors.
Both systems have been used extensively against missile attacks during the Iran conflict, creating concerns about American readiness for other potential military emergencies.
Lockheed Martin Plans Production Expansion
Lockheed Martin plans to triple its PAC-3 MSE production capacity by the end of 2030 and increase annual output to approximately 2,000 interceptors.
The company will expand employment at its Camden, Arkansas, facility by more than 50%, raising its workforce from about 1,200 to 1,850. It also plans to invest between $8 billion and $9 billion in modernising over 20 American production facilities.
The Pentagon is pursuing similar agreements for other weapons, including plans to increase annual Tomahawk missile production from around 60 to as many as 1,000.
