US Approves Up to $93 Million Arms Sale to India

The United States has approved a potential arms sale to India worth about $93 million, which includes the purchase of the FGM‑148 Javelin anti-tank missile system and Excalibur M982A1 precision-guided artillery projectiles. The package comprises an estimated $45.7 million for the Javelin system and around $47.1 million for the Excalibur rounds.

Components and Strategic Context

Under the deal, India may acquire Javelin command-launch units and missiles, enhancing its anti-armour and infantry suppression capabilities. The Excalibur ammunition would significantly boost Indian artillery precision. These acquisitions align with India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces and strengthen defence cooperation with the United States.

Broader Implications

This approval reflects deepening strategic ties between Washington and New Delhi in the Indo-Pacific region’s shifting security environment. Analysts say the sale reinforces India’s deterrence posture amid regional challenges and signals that US export policy is increasingly open to high-end systems for India. However, final contracts, delivery schedules and offset arrangements are still pending further approval and negotiation.
