Urvashi Rautela Questioned by ED in Betting App Probe
Actor and model Urvashi Rautela appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in New Delhi on Tuesday for questioning in a money laundering case linked to the online betting platform 1xBet, where she is the Indian brand ambassador.
Summons and Statement
Rautela was summoned earlier this month and recorded her statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is probing the flow of endorsement payments to celebrities and whether such funds were used to purchase assets.
Celebrities Under the Scanner
Several public figures have already been questioned in connection with the case. Cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, and Robin Uthappa were called in earlier. In the film industry, Sonu Sood, Mimi Chakraborty, and Ankush Hazra also came under scrutiny for their associations with betting platforms.
Alleged Financial Links
Officials allege that proceeds from endorsements may have been diverted into real estate and other investments, and are preparing to attach assets believed to be linked to these funds. The ED maintains that such money constitutes “proceeds of crime.”
Regulatory Push and Risks
With India tightening rules against online betting and banning surrogate advertisements, celebrities face increased legal risks for promoting such platforms. Violations can attract charges under anti-money laundering and gaming laws.
