University Grants Commission Identifies 32 Fake Universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has flagged 32 fake and unrecognised university entities operating across India, warning students and stakeholders against enrolling in these institutions. The list includes multiple entries from the National Capital Region, with authorities urging verification before admission.

UGC Fake Universities List Across India

The UGC released an updated list of bogus higher education providers that have been wrongly using names similar to recognised universities. The list spans across 15 states and union territories, with institutions falsely claiming degree-granting authority without UGC approval.

Delhi leads the list with 12 fake universities, the highest for any state or union territory, followed by other regions with lower counts. These entities are not empowered to award degrees under the UGC Act and are considered unrecognised.

Delhi Tops Fake University Reports

UGC officials pointed out that the National Capital Region has seen a proliferation of unapproved entities marketing themselves as universities. The list includes names that mimic recognised institutions, creating potential confusion among prospective students.

State education departments have been notified to take action against these fake providers and to prevent further operation or advertising. Students are advised to check the official UGC list before applying to any higher education institution.

Verification Of University Recognition

Under the UGC Act, only institutions established by a Central Act, State Act or recognised by the commission can award degrees. The presence of unrecognised “universities” poses risks to students, including degrees that may not be valid for employment or higher studies.

The UGC has directed regulatory authorities to shut down operations of fake entities and to take legal action where necessary. Prospective students and parents are urged to use the UGC’s official portal to confirm the recognition status of universities before enrollment.
