United Nations Warns After US Russia Nuclear Pact Ends
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that the end of a key nuclear pact arrangement between the United States and Russia marks a serious development for global strategic stability.
US Russia Nuclear Pact End
Guterres said the collapse of the nuclear agreement removes an important restraint on the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals. The treaty had placed limits on deployed strategic nuclear warheads and delivery systems, forming a core element of post Cold War arms control architecture.
With the pact no longer in force, verification measures and inspection mechanisms between the two countries also cease, reducing transparency in nuclear deployments.
Global Nuclear Security Concerns
The United Nations cautioned that weakening arms control frameworks increases the risk of miscalculation and escalation. International security experts have long considered bilateral US Russia agreements essential for maintaining predictability in deterrence relations.
Several countries expressed concern that the development could encourage expansion of nuclear stockpiles and complicate non proliferation efforts.
UN Appeal for Dialogue
The UN urged both Washington and Moscow to resume negotiations and establish new safeguards to prevent an arms race. The organisation emphasised that diplomatic engagement remains critical to preserving strategic stability and reducing global nuclear risk.
