UN Rules Out Sabotage In Trump Escalator Halt

The United Nations has dismissed claims that the escalator which abruptly stopped during President Donald Trump’s visit was sabotaged. According to UN officials, the halt was caused by a built-in safety mechanism in the escalator system.

What UN Says Happened

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that a videographer from Trump’s delegation, who was walking backward filming, likely triggered the safety cut. The mechanism is designed to activate if potential hazards are detected — such as irregular motion or objects entering the escalator’s comb step. After the stop, technicians quickly reset the system.

Trump’s Allegations Of Malpractice

Trump had accused the UN of deliberate sabotage, citing three incidents: the escalator stoppage, a teleprompter failure, and audio disruption during his speech. He demanded an investigation and said those responsible should be arrested. The UN clarified that it does not control the teleprompter, and the audio system in the assembly hall functions through delegate earpieces.

Broader Context

This episode occurred during Trump’s address at the 80th UN General Assembly. While the escalator issue has a technical explanation, the dispute underscores tensions between Trump and the global body, especially over protocol and performance.
