UN Rights Chief Urges End to Violence in Bangladesh

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has urged people in Bangladesh to refrain from violence and revenge attacks following recent unrest triggered by the death of a prominent protest leader. Türk said on Friday that retaliation and revenge would only deepen divisions in the country and harm the rights of all citizens.

The appeal came amid widespread protests and clashes that erupted after Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure in last year’s political movement, died from gunshot injuries sustained earlier this month. His death sparked anger and demonstrations in several cities, with some protestors turning violent.

Rising tensions and attacks

Violence in Bangladesh included incidents of vandalism, arson and attacks on media offices and other properties. Protests spread across many districts, with crowds demanding justice and accountability for Hadi’s killing. There have been reports of journalists and officials facing threats and assaults in the tense atmosphere.

The interim government has condemned the attacks and appealed for restraint, warning that lawlessness could undermine democratic processes ahead of the general elections. Security forces have been deployed in key areas to prevent further violence.

Türk also called on the authorities to conduct impartial and transparent investigations into the events leading to Hadi’s death and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
