UN Hopes India, Pakistan Use Ceasefire for Dialogue

The United Nations has welcomed the recent ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that both nations will use the development as a stepping stone to resolve their long-standing disputes through dialogue.

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized that the ceasefire is a positive shift from earlier hostilities. “The ceasefire is holding. I think we have seen we’re in a better place than we were before. We hope that the parties will use this to deal with a lot of the outstanding issues between them,” he said.

The renewed ceasefire agreement was reached after days of cross-border hostilities involving drone intrusions and missile fire. Tensions had been mounting along the Line of Control and international border following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which had further complicated an already volatile situation.

India Pakistan Ceasefire

The ceasefire, which came into effect on May 10, was seen by many observers as a diplomatic breakthrough amidst fears of a larger conflict. Both sides have since maintained restraint, avoiding further escalation. The agreement, reached through backchannel talks, included assurances of mutual non-aggression and a commitment to de-escalation.

The UN has consistently supported peaceful resolution of disputes between India and Pakistan, particularly in light of their nuclear capabilities and regional influence. Officials have reiterated that reducing military tensions is critical not just for bilateral ties but also for regional peace and global stability.

UN Appeal for Dialogue

The international body has urged both governments to prioritize diplomacy over provocation. According to the UN, continued adherence to the ceasefire could create a conducive environment for broader political negotiations and resolution of core issues that have hindered bilateral relations for decades.

With the ceasefire still intact days after its announcement, global attention remains focused on how India and Pakistan will build on this fragile but significant truce. While past ceasefire efforts have faltered, there is cautious optimism that sustained dialogue may finally take precedence over periodic confrontation.
