UN Chief Welcomes Hamas Statement on Gaza Proposal

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “welcomed and encouraged” by Hamas’s statement that it is willing to release hostages and engage in discussions on the U.S. peace proposal for Gaza. He urged all parties to seize the opportunity to end the conflict swiftly.

Hamas Declaration

Hamas declared readiness to consider parts of the 20-point peace plan and to release Israeli captives. However, it did not commit unconditionally to every point; disagreements remain over issues like military control and the future governance of Gaza.

Global Response

Following the Hamas statement, diplomatic reactions came swiftly. Countries and international organizations reiterated calls for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and mediated dialogue. Some welcomed the gesture as a rare sign of flexibility. Others cautioned that a statement is not the same as binding agreement and that concrete policy steps must follow.

Challenges Ahead

Officials note that Hamas’s willingness to talk is only the first step. Trust is low, and many key elements—such as disarmament, the role of Hamas, and Israeli withdrawal—are contested. Implementation, verification, and enforcement would pose major hurdles. Observers say real progress will depend on clear guarantees and external monitoring of compliance.
