UN Chief Urges Israel to Reverse NGO Ban
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Israel to reverse its decision to suspend the operations of several international non-governmental organisations working in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The UN chief warned that the move could seriously disrupt humanitarian assistance at a time when civilian needs in Gaza remain acute due to ongoing conflict and infrastructure damage.
Impact on Humanitarian Aid
According to the United Nations, the affected organisations play a critical role in delivering food, medical care, shelter, and other essential services to civilians. Guterres said that restricting their work risks worsening an already fragile humanitarian situation. He stressed that humanitarian actors must be allowed to operate independently and safely, in line with international humanitarian principles, to reach vulnerable populations without delay.
Israel’s Position and UN Appeal
Israel has said the suspension is linked to new regulatory and security requirements for organisations operating in the area. However, the UN chief urged Israeli authorities to reconsider the decision, emphasising that humanitarian access should not be impeded and that aid agencies must be protected from political or administrative barriers. He called for constructive engagement to resolve concerns while ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian operations.
Wider International Attention
The issue has drawn international attention, with aid groups warning that prolonged restrictions could have serious consequences for civilians in Gaza. The United Nations said it will continue to engage with Israeli authorities and humanitarian partners to safeguard access and prevent further deterioration of living conditions in the region.
