Umar Khalid Gets Interim Bail to Attend Sister’s Wedding
A Delhi court on Thursday granted interim bail to activist and former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, who is an accused in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots. The permission was granted so he can attend his sister’s wedding later this month.
The order was issued by the Karkardooma Court, which allowed Khalid to remain out of custody from December 16 to December 29. He has been asked to furnish a personal bond of 20,000 rupees along with two sureties of the same amount. The court made it clear that he must surrender back to prison on the evening of December 29.
Court Sets Strict Conditions
The court directed Khalid to strictly follow all conditions during the bail period. He cannot contact any witness in the case, cannot use social media, and must restrict his travel to the venues mentioned in his application. Authorities will also monitor his movements during the interim period.
Case Background
Khalid was arrested in September 2020 under UAPA and various IPC sections for his alleged role in a wider conspiracy behind the communal violence. His regular bail plea remains pending as hearings on the matter continue. This is not the first time he has received short-term bail for family events.
