Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refinery with Drones
Ukrainian drones targeted the Kirishi oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region overnight on 14 September 2025. Russian officials said three drones were intercepted, but falling debris caused a fire at the site. No casualties were reported.
Kirishi Refinery’s Importance
The Kirishi facility, run by Surgutneftegaz, is one of Russia’s largest refineries with a processing capacity of about 355,000 barrels per day. It plays a crucial role in Russia’s energy output and supply chain.
Damage and Fire Control
Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko confirmed that the fire caused by drone debris was brought under control quickly. He reported only minor property damage. Ukrainian drone operators described the attack as successful, though the full extent of structural damage remains unclear.
Broader Military Strategy
The refinery strike is part of Ukraine’s wider campaign to target Russian energy infrastructure. By attacking oil facilities, Ukraine aims to disrupt fuel supplies and logistics that support Russian military operations, adding pressure to Moscow’s war efforts.
