Ukraine Signs Letter For Up To 100 Rafale Jets
Ukraine has signed a letter of intent with France to potentially acquire up to 100 Rafale fighter jets, along with drones and advanced air-defence systems. The announcement followed President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. The understanding marks one of the largest prospective defence packages between the two countries.
What The Package Includes
The proposal covers new Rafale aircraft, SAMP/T air-defence units, drones, radars and associated weapons. French officials clarified that all equipment will be newly manufactured and will not be diverted from France’s existing military stock. The letter of intent is not a binding contract, and final agreements on financing, quantities and delivery schedules will be worked out in the coming months.
Strategic Significance
The move highlights Ukraine’s push to upgrade its air capability in the ongoing conflict with Russia. For France, the proposed sale signals a deeper European security involvement and reinforces its position in the defence-export sector. Analysts note that pilot training, logistical setup and long-term funding remain major hurdles. Full implementation of the plan could take several years.
