Ukraine President Zelenskyy Says India ‘Mostly With Us’

At the UN, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he believes India is “mostly with us” in Ukraine’s struggle. He acknowledged disagreements over energy but expressed hope that India would eventually shift its stance.

Energy Tensions Remain

Zelenskyy pointed to India’s ongoing oil purchases from Russia as a sticking point. He said those “questions with energy” must be addressed and implied that diplomatic efforts could persuade India to reconsider those ties.

Call for Stronger Ties

He urged closer India–Europe cooperation and praised potential mediation by Western nations, including U.S. leadership, to influence India’s energy policy choices. Zelenskyy said, “we have to do everything not to withdraw Indians.”

India’s Diplomatic Balance

India has maintained a nuanced approach throughout the Russia–Ukraine conflict. While it has condemned the humanitarian crisis and called for diplomacy, it has also continued trade, including importing discounted Russian oil. India has abstained in key UN votes and insisted on dialogue based on international law.
