UK Will Not Join US-Israel Offensive On Iran: Starmer

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said Britain will not take part in offensive strikes against Iran, clarifying that its involvement in the region is limited to defensive measures. His statement comes amid escalating tensions following military exchanges between Iran, the United States and Israel.

UK Not Joining US-Israeli Offensive

Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom is not joining the US-Israeli offensive strikes on Iran. He said the government’s decision is based on the principle of collective self-defence and the protection of British citizens and interests. While acknowledging coordination with allies, Starmer emphasised that British forces are not participating in direct offensive operations against Iranian targets.

The clarification follows concerns about the extent of the UK’s military role as regional hostilities intensify.

British Bases Used For Defensive Purposes

The prime minister confirmed that British military bases have been made available to support the US response to Iran’s attacks. However, he stressed that their use is limited to agreed defensive purposes. According to Starmer, the arrangements are focused on safeguarding allies and ensuring the security of British personnel in the region.

He reiterated that any support provided is within the framework of international law and aimed at preventing further escalation.

UK To Continue Defensive Actions In Region

Starmer added that while the UK is not engaging in offensive strikes, it will continue defensive actions in the region. These measures include protecting British assets, supporting allied defence systems and maintaining readiness in response to evolving threats.

The UK government has urged restraint from all parties and called for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions as the situation remains volatile.
