UK Warns Russia After Spy Ship Targets RAF Pilots

The United Kingdom has issued a strong warning to Russia after the intelligence-gathering vessel Yantar allegedly directed laser beams at Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots flying near its position north of Scotland. Defence Secretary John Healey said the incident was “deeply dangerous” and confirmed that the UK has deployed a Royal Navy frigate along with RAF surveillance aircraft to monitor the Russian ship’s movements.

UK Signals Military Readiness

Healey stated that this is the first recorded case of the Yantar using lasers against British aircraft and added that “military options are ready” if the vessel changes its route or poses a further threat. The UK has also tightened its naval rules of engagement to permit closer tracking of Russian ships operating near critical undersea infrastructure, including communication cables.

Russia Denies Allegations

The Russian embassy rejected the UK’s claims, insisting that the Yantar is an oceanographic research vessel and has not engaged in hostile behaviour. However, UK defence officials say the ship has long been associated with intelligence operations, particularly mapping and potentially interfering with undersea networks. Analysts warn that the incident highlights rising maritime tensions between NATO countries and Russia, with undersea infrastructure becoming an increasingly sensitive security domain.
