UK to Recognise Palestine Unless Israel Accepts Ceasefire

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the United Kingdom will formally recognise the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly in September if Israel fails to agree to a ceasefire and meet other peace-related conditions. This represents a major policy move and signals growing international frustration over the conflict in Gaza.

Starmer Lists Conditions for Israel

Starmer made it clear that recognition will proceed unless Israel commits to four key steps: agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza, allowing unrestricted humanitarian access under UN supervision, halting annexation activities in the West Bank, and committing to a two-state solution. He emphasised that the Palestinian people have an “inalienable right” to statehood.

Public Pressure Mounts Amid Gaza Crisis

The decision follows increasing public and political pressure in the UK over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. Civilian deaths have crossed 60,000, and essential supplies remain critically low. Over 200 Members of Parliament have called on the government to recognise Palestine without waiting for Israeli concessions.

Israel and Trump React Strongly

Israel denounced the UK’s stance, claiming it undermines ongoing efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and secure hostage releases. Former U.S. President Donald Trump also criticised the move, calling it premature and unhelpful. He stated that any recognition of Palestine should come after, not before, a peace deal.

UK Invokes Historical Responsibility

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said Britain has a historical responsibility in the region and can no longer delay supporting Palestinian rights. While reaffirming the UK’s support for Israel’s security, he stated that Palestinian dignity and nationhood must also be upheld.

What Happens Next

Starmer confirmed that the UK will review progress by September and will act accordingly if Israel does not meet the outlined terms. He also urged Hamas to disarm, release hostages, and allow new leadership to emerge in Gaza, stating that peace requires responsibility from all sides.
