UK PM Urges US to Drop Tariff Threats on Allies
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told U.S. President Donald Trump that threatening tariffs on NATO allies over the Greenland issue is wrong and risks damaging long-standing transatlantic ties. The message was conveyed during diplomatic conversations as tensions rise between the United States and several European countries.
Concerns Over Alliance Unity
Starmer said economic pressure on allies working together on collective security undermines trust within NATO. He stressed that disputes linked to Greenland should be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy, not trade penalties that could weaken cooperation among partners.
Europe Pushes Back
European governments have voiced strong opposition to the tariff threats, warning that such steps could harm trade relations and strain political alliances. Leaders across Europe have reiterated that Greenland’s status is a matter for Denmark and the people of Greenland, in line with international law.
Call for Dialogue
The UK has urged Washington to engage constructively with its allies and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. European leaders continue to coordinate their response while keeping diplomatic channels open to prevent further deterioration in relations.
