UK PM Starmer To Visit India October 8-9

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will make his first official visit to India from October 8 to 9, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced. The trip will focus on strengthening the India-UK Strategic Partnership under the banner of “Vision 2035.”

Agenda And Focus

During his visit, PM Starmer is expected to hold wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Key topics likely to come up include trade, investment, defence cooperation, technology, climate change, health, and education. The two leaders will also review progress under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) or the free trade deal signed earlier this year.

Trade Ties And Recent Developments

The UK and India recently finalised a major trade agreement in July, which aims to cut tariffs on goods like textiles, whisky, and cars, and expand market access for both sides. The deal is seen as a foundation for deeper economic engagement. India is also pushing ahead with plans to diversify its trade partnerships and modernise its export capacities.

Symbolic And Strategic Significance

Starmer’s India visit comes amid a global shift in economic alliances and increasing diplomatic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. This trip underscores UK’s commitment to India as a key partner and seeks to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties.
