UK Deports First Migrant Under New France Treaty
The United Kingdom has deported its first migrant to France under a new “one-in, one-out” treaty with Paris. The migrant, an Indian national, was flown to Paris after arriving in the UK via a small boat in August.
Purpose of the Agreement
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood called the deportation an “important first step” in the UK’s efforts to curb illegal crossings of the English Channel. Under the agreement, the UK is to return some migrants who arrive via small boats, while accepting vetted asylum seekers from France through a safe and legal route.
Legal Challenges & Human Rights Concerns
The new policy has already faced legal obstacles. Courts have temporarily blocked other deportations, especially where people claim modern slavery or trafficking concerns. The UK government has defended its policy, stating it will resist “last-minute, vexatious” legal filings aimed at delaying removal.
