UK, Canada & Australia Recognise Palestine Statehood

On 21 September 2025, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia formally recognised the State of Palestine. The move marks a major diplomatic shift among Western allies of Israel.

Purpose Behind the Move

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the recognition aims to “revive the hope of peace” and strengthen efforts for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. He clarified that the decision is not a reward for Hamas but a step to restore dialogue.

Reactions Mixed

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the announcement, describing it as an important step toward peaceful coexistence. Israel, however, strongly opposed the recognition, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejecting any Palestinian statehood west of the Jordan River.
