Udhayanidhi Stalin Warns Against Hindi Imposition in Tamil Nadu
Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has voiced strong concerns regarding the potential imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu, suggesting it could erode the Tamil language as it has affected regional languages in northern India. He highlighted that languages such as Rajasthani, Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, and other Bihari dialects have been overshadowed by Hindi, leading to their diminished use. Stalin emphasized that a similar scenario in Tamil Nadu could threaten the rich heritage of the Tamil language.
Historical Resistance to Language Imposition
Tamil Nadu has a storied history of opposing the imposition of Hindi. Stalin recalled significant protests over the past century centered on education and language rights. He paid homage to martyrs like Thalamuthu, Natarajan, and Keezhapalur Chinnasamy, who sacrificed their lives defending the Tamil language. Stalin asserted that the state’s commitment to preserving its linguistic identity remains unwavering, with many prepared to continue the fight against any form of linguistic dominance.
Political Leaders Unite Against Central Policies
The protest saw participation from various political leaders, including VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani, DMK treasurer T R Baalu, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, MDMK leader Vaiko, CPM state secretary P Shanmugam, and CPI state secretary R Mutharasan. These leaders collectively criticized the central government’s approach, particularly the alleged encroachment upon state rights and the perceived imposition of a ‘One Nation, One Language’ policy. The unified stance underscores the broader resistance within Tamil Nadu against policies that are viewed as threats to its linguistic and cultural autonomy.
The ongoing discourse highlights the delicate balance between national integration and regional identity, emphasizing the importance of respecting India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
