Udhayanidhi Stalin Denies Insulting Women
Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has denied making derogatory remarks about women, maintaining that his controversial speech during a Cauvery protest carried no double meaning. His statement came after he was arrested, questioned and released on station bail.
Udhayanidhi Stalin Denies Misogynistic Remarks
Addressing supporters following his release, the DMK leader said he never intended to malign women or insult any individual. He maintained that his words had only one meaning and were connected to his demand for the release of Cauvery water for Tamil Nadu’s farmers.
Udhayanidhi also referred to the women in his family while rejecting allegations that he had disparaged women. He accused the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government of spreading misinformation and using the controversy to divert attention from the Cauvery water-sharing dispute.
Cauvery Protest Remarks Trigger Controversy
The controversy began after Udhayanidhi addressed a farmers’ protest in Thanjavur. His response to slogans raised by sections of the crowd was interpreted by critics as a sexually suggestive double entendre involving actor Trisha Krishnan and Chief Minister Vijay.
The TVK women’s wing subsequently filed a complaint, leading police to register a case and arrest Udhayanidhi at his Chennai residence. The DMK rejected the allegations, claiming that neither the actor nor any other individual was named during the speech.
Udhayanidhi Released on Station Bail
The Madras High Court considered the matter after the DMK sought legal protection for Udhayanidhi. The Tamil Nadu government informed the court that police would not seek his judicial remand and that he would be released on station bail after questioning.
Udhayanidhi was later released from Sengipatti police station. He described the case as politically motivated and said he would challenge it through legal channels. The controversy has intensified the political confrontation between the opposition DMK and the ruling TVK government.
