Udhayanidhi Alleges 550 Crimes Under TVK Rule
Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has accused the TVK government of presiding over a sharp deterioration in law and order, alleging that more than 550 serious crimes were reported during Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s first 116 days in office. Vijay rejected the broader criticism and said he would respond to the Opposition’s allegations in detail on Monday.
Udhayanidhi Alleges 550 Crimes Under TVK Rule
Speaking during a debate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on grants for the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments, Udhayanidhi claimed the state had recorded around 200 murders, more than 300 sexual offences involving women and children, eight custodial deaths and 10 caste-related killings.
The figures were presented by the DMK leader as political allegations during the Assembly debate and have not been independently established as a comparative assessment of crime under the new government.
Udhayanidhi said law and order had “hit rock bottom” and questioned Vijay, who holds the police portfolio, over the government’s response.
DMK Targets Vijay Over Police Administration
The Opposition leader also accused the TVK government of failing to introduce major new schemes during its first 116 days and claimed the administration was relying heavily on programmes inherited from the previous DMK government.
He further questioned the government over POCSO cases, custodial deaths and its handling of protests, including demonstrations against NEET.
Vijay Promises Detailed Reply on Monday
Vijay intervened during the heated Assembly exchanges and said he would provide a point-by-point response on Monday, September 7.
The Chief Minister challenged DMK legislators to remain in the House to hear his answers rather than stage a walkout.
The confrontation marks one of the sharpest exchanges yet between Vijay’s TVK government and the DMK Opposition over the administration’s early record.
