Udhayanidhi Affidavit Row Reaches Madras HC
A new legal controversy has emerged around Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s 2026 election affidavit after the Income Tax Department told the Madras High Court that an investment of Rs 7.36 crore in Red Giant Movies, disclosed in 2021, does not appear in his latest poll affidavit. The issue is now part of an ongoing case examining alleged inconsistencies between election disclosures and financial records.
Udhayanidhi Stalin Affidavit Faces Fresh Scrutiny
The Income Tax Department informed the Madras High Court that the 2026 affidavit does not reflect a Red Giant Movies investment of Rs 7.36 crore that had been disclosed earlier in 2021. At the same time, the department also pointed to a new investment of Rs 2.63 crore in the same company shown in the name of Stalin’s spouse, which it said was not disclosed earlier. The matter has added fresh focus to the financial details declared in the election affidavit.
Income Tax Department Flags Affidavit Inconsistencies
In its counter-affidavit, the department said there were inconsistencies across election filings and related financial records. It also highlighted issues linked to loan disclosures. According to the response, the 2026 affidavit mentions loans of Rs 10 crore, while the 2021 affidavit recorded around Rs 11.06 crore. However, company financial records reportedly show borrowings of around Rs 17.69 crore. The department has said no conclusive finding can be made at this stage without fuller records.
Madras High Court To Hear Election Affidavit Plea
The case arises from a plea filed by a voter from the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency seeking a probe into alleged discrepancies in Udhayanidhi Stalin’s 2021 and 2026 election affidavits. The petitioner has alleged disappearance of earlier declared assets, unexplained loan variations and contradictions between affidavit disclosures and corporate records. The Madras High Court had issued notice earlier this month, and the matter has now been adjourned by four weeks.
