UAE to Launch First National Passenger Rail in 2026
The United Arab Emirates is set to launch its first national passenger rail service in 2026, marking a major expansion of the country’s transport infrastructure. The service will be operated by Etihad Rail, which is building a rail network connecting all seven emirates.
Routes and Connectivity
The passenger trains will run on the existing national rail network spanning about 900 kilometres. The initial routes will link major cities including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah, improving inter-emirate connectivity and reducing dependence on road travel.
Speed and Travel Time
Passenger trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 200 kmph. Travel time between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is estimated to be under an hour, offering a faster and more sustainable alternative to car journeys.
Phased Rollout
Stations will open in phases during 2026, starting with key urban hubs. The passenger service builds on Etihad Rail’s existing freight operations and is part of the UAE’s broader push for integrated and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
