UAE President Visits Qatar After Israeli Strike
In a show of Gulf unity, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in Qatar today, one day after Israel launched an airstrike on Hamas officials in Doha. The unscheduled visit signals solidarity with Qatar amid rising regional tensions.
Details of the Israeli Strike
The strike, which took place on September 9, 2025, targeted a residential compound in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district where senior Hamas leaders were meeting to discuss a U.S. ceasefire proposal. The attack involved approximately 15 Israeli fighter jets deploying around ten bombs. Six people were killed—including the son of Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, three of his aides, and a Qatari security officer—but top Hamas leaders reportedly survived.
Global Condemnation
The strike prompted widespread condemnation. Germany called the attack “unacceptable,” citing violations of Qatar’s sovereignty. Qatar’s Prime Minister denounced it as a “blatant attack” and reserved the right to respond. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also condemned the strike, calling it a breach of sovereignty and a threat to regional stability. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was informed too late to stop the attack, expressed strong displeasure and affirmed that the decision was solely Israel’s.
Israel’s Response
Israel’s Defense Minister vowed increased action against Hamas “everywhere” unless the group surrenders and releases remaining hostages.
Regional Diplomatic Activity
Regional diplomatic activity followed swiftly: Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein is visiting Qatar today, and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected tomorrow, in further gestures of solidarity with Doha.
