UAE Freezes Most Pakistani Visas Amid Crime Concerns

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has begun suspending visa issuance for most Pakistani passport holders, with exceptions only for blue (government) and diplomatic passports. The restriction follows reports that several Pakistani visitors were involved in criminal activities, including begging, overstaying and other offences. The move was confirmed by a senior Pakistani official before the country’s Senate Human Rights Committee.

Reasons for the Visa Freeze

According to Pakistani authorities, Gulf-nation governments flagged rising instances where people entering on regular visas allegedly misused them for unlawful activities. These included organised begging rings, overstaying and reported criminal cases. The UAE and other Gulf countries say the freeze is necessary to curb abuse of visit-visa privileges and ensure public safety.

Scope and Impact

The freeze currently affects visa categories including tourist, visit and employment permits. Existing visa-holders remain unaffected and may continue until their visas expire, but new applications are being paused. The decision has caused concern among Pakistani workers, students and families planning travel, as the UAE remains a major destination for migrants from Pakistan.

What Lies Ahead

Pakistani officials have warned that if the visa freeze becomes a formal ban, it will be difficult to reverse. Meanwhile, affected citizens are awaiting clarity from the UAE on whether visa issuance may resume — and under what new conditions.
