UAE Closes Beaches Across Three Emirates Amid Oil Spill

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have closed beaches across several northern coastal areas following an offshore oil spill, raising concerns about marine pollution and public safety. Ras Al Khaimah announced the closure of all its beaches on Saturday, October 24, joining neighbouring Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah, where restrictions had already been introduced.

The latest decision comes as UAE authorities work to contain oil leaking from an unidentified tanker. Environmental assessments are underway to determine the extent of the contamination and the measures required to protect coastal areas.

Ras Al Khaimah Announces Beach Closures

Ras Al Khaimah’s Public Services Department announced that all beaches in the emirate would remain closed until further notice. The statement, shared by the emirate’s police headquarters, did not specify the reason for the decision.

In neighbouring Umm Al Quwain, authorities temporarily closed beaches and coastal areas around the city pending technical assessments. Sharjah also shut Al Hamriyah Beach as a precaution.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment advised fishermen and other sea users to avoid affected waters and follow official safety instructions.

Authorities Investigate Offshore Oil Leak

The UAE government confirmed on Friday that operations were underway to contain oil escaping from a tanker offshore.

However, authorities have not identified the vessel or disclosed what caused the leak. The ministry is assessing potential environmental damage before determining further protective measures.

Residents in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain reported unusual, pungent odours. The environment ministry said the smells did not pose health risks.

Maritime Security Concerns Remain

The incident comes amid heightened concern about maritime safety in the Gulf following attacks on commercial vessels during the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.

However, authorities have not established any connection between the oil spill and those attacks.

The beach closures also affect a region known for its coastal tourism and resorts. Officials have not announced when the affected beaches will reopen, with restrictions remaining in place while assessments and containment operations continue.
