U.S. Envoy-Designate Says U.S. Values India Ties
U.S. Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor said on Saturday that the United States “greatly values” its relationship with India and that President Donald Trump regards Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great and personal friend.”
Meeting With Modi
Gor met with PM Modi in New Delhi after arriving in India. He described the meeting as “incredible” and said they discussed key areas including defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals.
Broader Outreach
Earlier in the day, Gor held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. He said Washington intends to deepen cooperation in the coming months.
Modi’s Take
Prime Minister Modi welcomed Gor’s visit and expressed confidence that his tenure will strengthen the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Modi posted on social media that he looked forward to closer collaboration.
Challenges Ahead
India–U.S. relations are under strain, especially over U.S. tariffs imposed on Indian goods. Gor had earlier said Washington and New Delhi are “not that far apart” on resolving trade issues and expects a deal in weeks. Still, both countries face hurdles in negotiating tariff relaxations and broader trade terms.
