U.S. Department of Justice: George Washington University Violated Civil Rights in Antisemitism Case

The U.S. Department of Justice has determined that George Washington University violated federal civil rights law by being “deliberately indifferent” to antisemitic harassment during pro-Palestinian protests on campus last year. The finding comes with a deadline of August 22 for the university to agree to a voluntary resolution to address the violations.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon stated that every student is entitled to an educational environment free from harassment. The DOJ’s report outlined instances where the university allegedly failed to take adequate action in response to reported antisemitic conduct.

In response, GWU reaffirmed its opposition to antisemitism and pledged to strengthen policies to ensure student safety. The university said it is reviewing the DOJ’s findings and will work toward compliance.

The action is part of a broader federal effort to hold universities accountable for failing to address campus antisemitism. Similar investigations have been launched against other prominent institutions. While supporters of the move say it is essential to protect students, critics argue it risks restricting free speech and political activism on campuses.
