Two Nipah Virus Cases Confirmed in West Bengal

West Bengal health authorities have confirmed two cases of Nipah virus infection after laboratory testing by the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Both patients are nurses and are currently in critical condition at a private hospital, prompting heightened surveillance and containment measures.

Lab Confirmation and Medical Status

Samples from the two nurses were initially tested locally before being sent to the Pune laboratory for confirmation. Officials said both patients remain under intensive medical care in isolation, and their condition is being closely monitored by specialist teams.

Contact Tracing Underway

State health officials have identified around 120 people who came into close contact with the infected nurses. These contacts include family members, co-workers, and healthcare staff. All identified individuals have been placed under home isolation, with regular health checks being conducted.

Containment Measures Intensified

The state government has activated emergency response protocols, including strict infection control procedures at hospitals, enhanced surveillance, and public health advisories. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and report any symptoms such as fever or respiratory distress at the earliest.
