Two Dead in Mumbai Landslide
At least two people were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck a residential settlement in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs early Wednesday following heavy rainfall. Several people were feared trapped under the debris as rescue operations continued.
Mumbai Landslide Hits Gaushiya Chawl
The landslide was reported at around 3.48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in the Chirag Nagar-Ashok Nagar area near Ghatkopar. A portion of a hillock collapsed, sending soil and debris onto two to three rooms of the chawl below.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade classified the incident as Level II and launched rescue operations. Local residents initially said several people could be trapped beneath the debris, although authorities were working to establish the exact number.
Two Dead in Mumbai Landslide
The deceased were identified as Sahil Ansari, 28, and Mohamad Samir, 14. Both were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.
Two others, including 18-year-old Sohel Ansari and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, sustained injuries. They were admitted to hospital and were reported to be in stable condition.
Rescue Operations Continue in Ghatkopar
Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, civic authorities and disaster response teams were deployed at the site. Rescue personnel used specialised equipment to search through the debris for possible survivors.
The incident occurred amid heavy monsoon rainfall in Mumbai, which has increased the risk of landslides and rockfalls in vulnerable hillside settlements.
Authorities have previously advised residents living in landslide-prone areas to relocate during periods of intense rainfall. Rescue and clearance operations continued at the affected site as officials assessed the extent of the damage.
