TVK’s Karur West District Secretary Held After Karur Rally Stampede
A major tragedy struck a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27, 2025, when a crowd crush at a gathering held by actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), resulted in significant loss of life and injuries.
Arrest Made
Tamil Nadu Police arrested Mathiyazhagan, TVK’s Karur West district secretary, charging him with murder, culpable homicide, and endangering public safety. He is believed to hold responsibility for mismanagement and lapses that led to the incident.
Incident Details
The rally was meant for about 10,000 people, but the crowd surged far beyond that number. Official reports say 41 people died, including children and women, and scores were injured. Investigations suggest Vijay’s delayed arrival, severe heat, and inadequate crowd control contributed to mounting tension.
Legal Actions & Claims
A First Information Report (FIR) names senior TVK leaders Bussy Anand and Nirmal Kumar, along with Mathiyazhagan, in connection with the tragedy. TVK has petitioned the Madras High Court to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, alleging the event was engineered by political rivals—especially the ruling DMK. The FIR also states that power was intentionally cut during the rally, adding chaos.
Reactions and Relief Measures
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called for calm and urged people not to spread rumors. Compensation of ₹10 lakh has been announced for each victim’s family. Vijay expressed deep sorrow and pledged support to the bereaved.
