TVK Stages State-Wide Protest Against Voter Roll Revision

The regional party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) held demonstrations across Tamil Nadu on Sunday, protesting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party alleges that the exercise is being conducted hastily and could lead to large-scale exclusion of eligible voters ahead of the 2026 assembly election. The protests spanned several districts including Villupuram, Madurai, Trichy, Karur and Thanjavur.

Allegations and Demands

TVK leaders claim that the SIR process, which requires even existing voters to submit fresh enumeration forms, risks disenfranchising millions of voters—especially younger voters and those from marginalised communities. They further accused the state government and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of influencing the process by controlling booth-level officers and enumeration forms. The party demanded withdrawal of the SIR and restoration of the earlier revision method to safeguard voter rights.

Political Implications

The protest signals growing apprehension around the integrity of the voter-roll revision exercise in Tamil Nadu. With the 2026 assembly elections looming, parties like TVK are positioning themselves as protectors of democratic rights. The state government and the Election Commission of India will now face pressure to address these concerns and ensure transparency in the revision process.
