TVK Leader Booked Over ‘Gen Z’ Post After Stampede
A senior member of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Aadhav Arjuna, has been charged over a social media post made shortly after a deadly rally stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The post, later deleted, called for a youth-led “revolution” against the state government.
Background of the Incident
Arjuna’s post appeared on X less than 48 hours after the September 27 rally, where at least 41 people died in a crowd crush and more than 80 were injured. In his message, he referenced protests in Sri Lanka and Nepal, suggesting that Tamil Nadu’s youth should follow similar movements.
Police Action
Authorities registered a case at the North Zone Cyber Crime station under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to incitement and public order. The post has since been deleted, but police say it had the potential to create unrest.
Political Reactions
The ruling DMK strongly criticized the remarks. MP Kanimozhi called the comments “irresponsible,” saying they could inflame tensions. TVK distanced itself from the post, stating it reflected Arjuna’s personal opinion and not the party’s official stance.
Legal Moves
Arjuna has approached the Madras High Court seeking protection. He also requested that TVK chief Vijay be allowed to meet families of the stampede victims. Meanwhile, TVK leaders named in the stampede case, including Bussy Anand and C.T. Nirmal Kumar, have filed pleas for pre-arrest bail, terming the charges politically motivated.
