Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Raises Kashmir at UN, Calls for Dialogue
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan used his address at the UN General Assembly to raise the Kashmir issue, urging India and Pakistan to resolve it through dialogue based on United Nations resolutions.
Reference to Ceasefire
Erdoğan expressed satisfaction over the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which followed a serious escalation last April. He said he hoped the situation would now settle through diplomatic efforts.
Call for UN-Backed Solution
He said that Kashmir should be settled “on the basis of the resolutions of the UN” and emphasized the need to consider the aspirations of the people in the region.
Indian Government Reacts
India rejected Erdoğan’s remarks, stating that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and that external commentary on its internal affairs is unacceptable. The Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed India’s sovereignty over the region.
Pattern of Remarks
Erdoğan has previously brought up Kashmir in multiple UN addresses. He did not mention the issue in his 2024 address, but earlier in 2025, during a visit to Pakistan, he had also called for a UN resolution and dialogue on Kashmir.
